The Reserves travelled the short distance to near neighbours Northwood for Greenford’s penultimate Premier ‘B’ league match of the season. In an entertaining and eventful match the home side won narrowly in the gloom of a dimly lit Northwood Park.
Northwood started strongly and made all the early running and were unfortunate not to take the lead when Myles Stephenson hit the bar. With the sun setting and the inky blackness of the night engulfing Northwood Park, the floodlights along one side of the stadium failed to illuminate the pitch. It was agreed however to muddle along till half time when an electrician could hopefully fix the problem and avoid the game being abandoned.
Greenford finally got a foothold in the match and just before the break substitute Joshua Quadry smashed the ball into the net from a poorly defended corner to take the lead. The half time interval was longer than usual as the electrician tried to rectify the floodlight situation. He only managed to get half the far side lights working but this was deemed sufficient to play out the remainder of the match.
The second half saw a determined Northwood side equalise in the 51st minute through Myles Stephenson and on the hour Ryan Lee added a second for the home side. Three minutes later Myles Stephenson scored his second of the match when he lifted the ball over Jamie Carpenter the Greenford custodian. Greenford battled hard and in the 76th minute got a goal back after Pouriya Salimbayat raced down the wing and squared the ball to Daniel Clerkin who slotted home. With only four minutes of normal time remaining Myles Stephenson completed his hat trick but Greenford once again hit back with Jamel Mattan playing in Daniel Clerkin who scored his second and Greenford’s third of the evening.
